(Source: UNESCO - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) On 4 November 1966, the exceptional rise of the water caused severe damage to the cities of Venice and Florence, their inhabitants and their cultural heritage. UNESCO's involvement for Venice started with the appeal launched by its then Director-General, René Maheu, on 2 December 1966, which led to the International Safeguarding Campaign for the Safeguarding of Venice. Funding and assistance came from all over the globe.
