San Bernardino: The first officer to enter the conference centre where 14 had been killed and 21 injured was measured, solemn as he described a scene of what he called unspeakable carnage. Lieutenant Mike Madden spoke of how the dead were sprawled among tables set and laden for a Christmas feast, and the cries of the wounded could be heard above the fire alarm and the water spraying from the sprinklers overhead.
